“OSC always builds me up and makes me feel like I can do anything. It is a lot of work but every step is one step closer to my dream.” Laura, 40, Lake District, Cumbria
Laura is well on her way to becoming a fully qualified counsellor and continuing on her path to helping people. Laura has a condition which limits her movements which is one of the main reasons for following a distance learning route.
“In 2018, after being through the counselling experience myself, I decided I wanted to continue my journey by helping others and becoming a counsellor. I have fibromyalgia which causes constant bone pain, and it can sometimes limit my ability to walk and stand which is why I chose distance learning as a route so I could do it at my own pace.
“In 2019 I completed an introduction to counselling level 2 course with Open Study College. It was a brilliant course. I learned so much and my tutor Lyn was super supportive. After I completed the course, it gave me a new confidence to chase my dreams, so I enrolled onto a BSC hons Psychology degree which I passed and graduated from in November 2022, a very proud day for me.
“Since earning my degree I am proud to be back at Open Study College once more to study my level 3 in counselling which commences this January.”
After bettering herself and gaining some really impressive qualifications, Laura opens up about her future plans and career goals outside of her interests in art therapy, photography and spending time with her family and friends.
“My future plan is to complete a trainee psychological wellbeing practitioner course which means going back to university again but this time on a work-based course. This will help me become a fully qualified counsellor as this is my main goal. I have been lost in the dark myself before and I know how hard it is to find the light.”
Laura describes her journey thus far and offers some helpful advice to those considering a similar route.
“It is a lot of work, but every step is one step closer to my dream. College is not for me. I have attempted to go a few times but have never received the same high level of support that I receive from Open Study College. They always builds me up and makes me feel like I can do anything.
“If I had any advice to offer someone thinking of studying with Open Study College, I’d say to go for it. They are all so supportive so you might not feel confident now, but they will build you up as you go. You’ll learn so much and will thoroughly enjoy it too. Thank you, Open Study College, for everything and your continued support.”
