What 5 Skills are Necessary for Leaders in 2022?

Now more than ever, employees need effective leadership in their organizations. For a lot of these organizations, combatting the repercussions of the pandemic was the biggest challenge in 2021. Reopening supply chains, bringing teams back into an office setting or a hybrid environment, and retaining and hiring employees during a talent shortage are all examples of priorities and challenges that leaders faced this past year.

Let’s face it, the business world will never go back to what we considered “normal” two years ago. These challenges have not only caused unprecedented chaos, but also provided a lot of opportunities for organizations and leaders across the globe. Ultimately, it is up to us leaders to change how we run our organizations and how we treat our employees moving forward.

A New Way of Leading

To be a successful and effective leader during this immense period of change, it is time to embrace new trends, expand your cultures, and forego the way you used to do things. To overcome some of the setbacks and challenges that a lot of teams are encountering, we have put together a list of five skills to take into consideration as you head into 2022.

  1. Embrace inclusivity. Focus on the different experiences and perspectives that your team members bring to the table and ensure that your employees are all treated equally. Team members should feel a high level of value and belonging within their organization. Provide resources and support so your employees have the ability to reach their full potential.   2. Cultivate better collaboration. Hybrid work is here to stay, which poses some challenges in the collaboration department. Leaders need to improve and be more precise when cultivating interactions and the effectiveness between teams. Collaboration does not tend to happen organically, and leaders need to open communication channels and define clear expectations, while also setting team goals. Leaders should always encourage a creative and immersive environment, whether in and office or on a screen.
  3. Improve technology infrastructure. Seth Godin recently said “we can choose to live behind the curve, or ahead of it.” The business world as we know it is surrounded and built on technological advancements. Technology transformation can definitely bring up some uneasy feelings for leaders. There are many new business technologies that are bursting onto the scene in 2021, including AI, remote onboarding and collaboration, comprehensive HR tech, and more. While these may seem like tools for the future, they are quickly becoming the present, and your business should be prepared to implement them quickly and efficiently.   4. Create a culture of accountability. You cannot just shower your employees with kindness and inclusivity and expect that to be enough. The best leaders keep their employees accountable, which means being more proactive versus reactive. Employees should always possess a sense of ownership for their role within the organization. You, in turn, need to hold yourself accountable as well. I have always said that an organization’s best asset is their people. Truth be told, if I were never held accountable to do better, be better, or create results, I would not be where I am today. Effective leaders will define results and set clear expectations while also seeking commitment from their teams. Most importantly, be open to receiving feedback and have an open-door policy for employees to feel empowered to be accountable.
  5. Invest in employee development and career pathing. I left this one for last because it is single-handedly the most important skill that leaders need to have. Leaders have the ability to empower their employees with the skills they need to improve their work, see better results, and overall, improve the organization’s bottom line. Sounds like a win, right? A better trained organization brings higher morale, higher retention, improved well-being, and desire to succeed, just to name a few incredibly important positive traits. Fostering a culture and environment where employee development is considered important creates opportunities for employees to feel excited and determined to be better at not only their current role, but what more they have to offer the organization in the future. Investment in employee learning and development will not only create a talent pool of exceptional and loyal employees, but also promote an environment of upward mobility and success.

Change will always be inevitable in an organization. The five skills mentioned above are definitely not the only things to focus on, but it is a good place to start.
